My Thrift Store Reopened!

Our church is having video support groups.  At one of our zoom "meetings" they asked what each of us missed the most during the quarantine .  I said I missed my thrift store. It reopened this week, and I finally had a chance to put on my latex gloves and go.

I like my thrift store for a variety of reasons.  They have special sales every day.  Each week they have a different colored hang tag on clothing that is only 25 cents.  (25 cents! You can't get much for 25 cents!) Saturdays they sometimes have mega-sales: like 50% off the entire store, or today when I went all clothing was only $1.  $1 means for coats, formals, dresses, mens clothes, whatever!

All of the money goes to Missouri Council Of The Blind -- so it all goes to a great cause. There are days I get a senior discount.  If you spend $100 (accumulative) you get a $10 discount.

Today I spent a big $33 and got a huge trash bag packed with clothes.  I got three long dresses in my size -- I usually scramble when I have to go to a formal event but now I will be ready.  One of the dresses fit great and was a keeper.  One had damage I failed to see before I bought (but hey, it was only a buck!).  One was a bit to small on the top but I am going to try to sell it on ebay.

I got several items for my husband that he was actually excited about, including these shorts! One of my sons is flying in from California in a couple of weeks, so I got him some things.  And I managed to get a few more things for myself.

Another Pair Of Upcycled Overalls

 Another pair of upcycled vintage overalls.

This one has a pink gingham theme.

 Pink gingham front pocket.

Pink gingham lady (from an old apron, I did

the edge embroidery but she was already embroidered.)

And a little of the sashiko embroidery that I have been doing.

A pink floral patch behind the hole.

 And I used a piece of embroidery from a pillowcase

for two places on the back.

 And stitched around them with blue thread.

She will look good coming or going.

I think I am going to try to sell this pair on ebay.

I am a horsey girl at heart.

Paid $1, sold for $61.

Vintage Western Fabric Finds

 I was looking through a box at the flea market this morning.

It is definitely someone's "quilt scrap" box -- 

you know, the small remnants of fabric she kept  to

cut into tiny shapes for quilts.

 There were other interesting bits in the box --

lots of floral feedsack.  But I was drawn to all

of the assorted patterns of mid-century western fabric.

Eight different patterns in all.

I am hoping someone out in ebay land finds

them as fascinating as I do.

Bought the box for $10, sold all of them sold for $73.

Selling Another Quilt From My Personal Collection

 This will be the third quilt that I am selling from my

personal collection.  These are the ones that I kept

because of their superb tiny stitches and great design.

I just don't have the room, or color scheme to keep

these beauties anymore.

Heading to ebay.

Selling The Nicest Quilt I Ever Owned

 I am not a "keeper".

It is rare that I keep any antiques that I buy.

But when I purchased this beauty 20 years ago I

couldn't let her go.

 The craftmanship was over the top --

tiny little handmade stitches everywhere.

 Interesting little 1.25" square "postage stamps" of

vintage and feedsack fabric.

All in perfect, never used, condition.

She hasn't found a place in our new house,

so she is moving on to a new home:(

Bought for $5, sold for $174 on ebay.

1878 Reading Apple Peeler

I have to give my husband credit for picking this up

at the estate sale we attended a few weeks ago.

It may be the biggest money maker that we purchased.

And so interesting....

 This apple parer was made by a company in Reading, PA

which started producing them in 1878.

 As you can see, it is still in working order!

It can peel up to 10 apples a minute!

I guess that if you were making apple cider

that would have been important.

There is a company that still makes them,

that is how well they work.

But this one is a very early version.

Paid $3, sold for $45.

Packed With Lunch Boxes

 At the moving sale we attended a couple weeks ago, these

are some of the things we came away with.

I paid about $1 each.

 Around 25 metal lunch boxes.

 About half of those are going on ebay.

The ebay lunchboxes sold for $186.

Just a few thermoses sold on ebay for $24.

 I had a lunchbox collection years ago,

and didn't have this many.

 They range from 1955 - 1984.

Some had thermoses and some did not.

The other half we will sell for $5 each at a flea market.

Vintage Ephemera Advertising

I scored a second album of vintage ephemera for $10.

I am putting all of the advertising pieces on ebay.

All date from around 1900.

Love this kitty advertising,

appearing to stand on little cat feet.

I love that this place sold crockery and wallpaper.

Wouldn't you have loved to have seen their merchandise?

Great Victorian angel advertising.

1902 and 1904 advertising,

without the calendars.

Perfect Red & Blue Quilt

 I would love to be able to tell you a great story about

where I got this quilt, but truthfully --

I just don't remember.

 What I do know is that it has gorgeous, tiny stitches...

 that it is in PERFECT condition (including the striped border)...

and that I am listing it on ebay soon.

Ephemera From A $4 Scrapbook

 We were pretty busy last weekend, getting ready for our sale.

But my husband managed to get to a yard sale and buy an old scrapbook for $4.

It really was tattered and in shreds, but you would be too if you were 120 years old.

 Some stuff was glued down, and some just loose.

These are five trade cards for "Swift's Beef Extract".

Sold for $5.

 Another trade card, which was a great advertising ploy.

Children and adults collected trade cards,

there wasn't much colored printing going on back then.

Sold for $5.

 This advertised typewriters manufactured in Omaha.

Sold for $52.

 1901 Singer Sewing Machine calendar.

Sold for $10.

 Booklet with litho flowers.

Sold for $5.

 Diecut greeting cards,

most published by Raphael Tuck & Sons.

Most of the stuff in the scrapbook dated between 1895- 1910.

Sold for $10.
