William Henry Chandler Original Pastel Drawing

Have you ever seen "Fun With Flags" with Sheldon on the "Big Bang Theory" ?
I feel like I should call this the "Fun With Artists" or "Monthly Artist Spotlight".
Last month I posted on two Maxfield Parrish prints,
click here to read that post.

Last week I was a vendor at an antique show,
and I took this drawing to sell.

I had purchased it 5-10 years ago
because I liked the frame. (Great, isn't it?)
It has been hanging in our bedroom since then. We are getting rid of some of our
personal collection and this was something that landed on the "to go" side.

While at the show, someone more knowledgeable
than myself commented that Chandler was a well-known artist
and that I should do more research on him.
So here it is....

William Henry Chandler (1854-1928)
William Henry Chandler has come to be known as America's foremost pastel artist. This is due,in part, to the indisputable fact that Chandler is this country's most prolific pastel artist. No other artist is responsible for more pastel art than Chandler. Beautiful landscapes, winter landscapes, wonderful marine and seascapes, still life fruit and fowl. Chandler's work portrays the feel and essence of a bygone era untouched by the course of human progress.
Chandler was a popular artist in his own time. His style was frequently copied by other artists of the era.  He was greatly influenced by the Hudson River School of Art. In turn, it is said that his work influenced other artists, such as Maxfield Parrish.

Remember last month's "featured artist"?  Yeah, that's right.
None other than Max himself.

I don't recall hearing about Chandler in any of my
Art History classes.  But to tell you the truth,
I was never real keen on pastels.

But now that I know that this original pastel might
be worth something, it is looking better and better.
Listing it on ebay soon.

My Booth At The Platte City MO Antique Show

Last weekend I was a vendor at the Platte City Antique Show.  It is a great show, I knew because I had done it a number of years ago.  I was thrilled to have an invitation extended to me to participate this year -- we are clearing out merchandise and some of our personal collections.

I sold this antique oil painting (paid $5 for it, sold for $35)
and the stone vase on the right
(paid $5,sold for $18).
I wish I could make a list of the type of items that are selling
right now, but I am always surprised myself.

I am selling my Chase's Candy Company collection.
This box did not sell, but two antique Chase's plates did.
The great chippy pot and pot holder on the left also sold.

I think I will have to lower my prices on the transferware
and the 48 star flag.

Jar, candle holder and walnut trunk they were sitting on, all sold.
Paid $1 for gallon jar in carrier, sold for $16.
Paid $2 for candleholder, sold for $14.

In the past I have done very well with original art work.
Not so much this show.

Mid-century lamp (paid $4, sold for $28, toy dresser (bought for $10, sold for $22)
and vintage chalkboard sold (paid $8, sold for $29).
I was very surprised to take home the garden bench,
part of my personal things I am clearing out.

Great garden cart (paid $25, sold for $105), green pie cabinet (paid $50, sold for $130),
and old trunk all sold.
Sold almost $1400 in merchandise.

Tiny Farmhouse Flip Tour

I have a friend who flips houses.  It is always interesting.  Like Chip & Joanna -- he does the construction end, she does the design and paperwork.  They recently completed a little farmhouse.  I saw it before they started on it, and had my doubts.  But they worked their magic, and it turned out so cute!  Unlike most of their flips, they will be living in this one for awhile.

I caught them "mid-move" so there are things on the wall,
but not all the furniture had been moved in...or appliances....or rugs.

They tore out some walls to really open up the downstairs space.
I think that she told me they will be able to seat about 24 people for a meal.

Loved the copper lights in the kitchen.

Husband did a great job on the vent hood.

Loved the pattern of the wood on the counters
and island.

Showing off the cabinets and farmhouse sink.

Click here to see the makeover on this buffet.

Loved the light in the "front room".

Also great natural light available in the tiny upstairs bath.

Here is the view from the shower.

They had all the hardwood floors refinished.
The short-plank oak turned out to be a stunner.

View of the wide kitchen island that can seat people
on both sides.

Lest you think you were looking at a big house,
here is the view from the outside.

Halloween Upcycled Vintage Hats 2017 Edition

I have been taking cheap vintage hats and upcycling them into classy (yet freaky)
Halloween toppers for several years now.  If you wish to see past years click:
2014 here, 2015 here, 2016 here.
Without further ado, I would like to present the 2017 Halloween hats:

GREEN SNAKE HAT
I made two snake hats this year, this is the first.

RUBBERY SNAKE HAT
This is the second snake hat.
I like how the snake tail hangs down the back,
 like decorative ribbon.

REAL BUGGY COLLECTION HAT
This hat was inspired when I found a huge dead bug in my yard,
he is front and center. I added a couple more real, and a couple fake bugs.

I had to figure out how to put them on pins,
without pinning anyone's head.
Pinning them to a huge furry spider was a good solution.

ME & MY DOLLY HAT
This is my only Halloween doll this year.
I found her at a flea market, no legs.
But she is not really very scary,
I gave her a fancy "matching" hat with a feather.

I'VE GOT MY EYE ON YOU HAT

DRIVING ME BATTY HAT
Bat in front glows in the dark.
This gives you a nice view of my model.

FURRY EYEBALLS HAT.
Eyeballs made out of pingpong balls.
This one is my favorite hat so far.
So far .... because there are more coming tomorrow.

Painting A Buffet For A Friend

I went to an estate sale a few weeks ago and saw this funky little buffet. ( I know what you are thinking....she is not supposed to buy furniture. And you are so right!)  I actually didn't buy it, but it was the $100 price tag rather than clear thinking that saved me.

I was attracted to the color and the art deco design on the doors (which I had already sanded off somewhat at the time of this photo.) But remember, it doesn't belong to me! Long story short, a friend of mine ended up purchasing it and didn't like the color or the art deco design as much as I did.  She asked me to paint it for her.  After sanding the design down, I painted the doors and top a light green to cover any stains or dark colors.

Then I did two thin coats of white with a paint that she had supplied.

A little distressing brought out some of the green underneath.
What a cute little piece she turned out to be!
I've christened her "Hettie".

Selling Vintage Typewriters

I am getting ready to list three vintage typewriters on ebay.
They are beauties.

These first two pics are of a Remington.

All three typewriters are fairly small and "portable".
But all seriously heavy.

 This is a Wanderer-Werke
(I think the "W" logo looks alot like Wonder Woman's).
It was made in Germany, about 1940.
Sold on ebay for $65.

This is a Royal Arrow.
After I took these pics I found that I had yet another Royal Arrow
(someone has a serious typewriter fetish) ,
but this one is two-toned and has "tombstone" shaped keys.

Vintage Framed Chalkboard Bible Verse

My SON and DIL (daughter-in-law) visited a couple weeks ago.
We managed to fit an amazing amount of activity in one little weekend.
When she mentioned that she was interested in making a chalkboard Bible verse,
we were all in.  Let's squeeze in one more activity.

First we had to shop for the vintage frame.
The right size and right amount of raised ornamental detail.
I had DIL paint two coats of an off-white on frame.
I came back at the end to do the fun part of dry-brushing
on a little gold highlighting.

SON was in charge of cutting a piece of fiberboard to size
and giving it two coats of black chalk paint.
Then we coaxed my talented husband into doing the
chalkboard art that she wanted with a Chalk Marker.

One awesome family project.
One happy (and sweet!) DIL.

Blue Hearts & The End Of My Blog

Early on during the corona virus, I did this project. When we put scalloped wood trim on the guest cottage door, we had some of the trim ...
