Red Buds Are A Bloomin'

Tuesday we made our way to the Springfield Botanical Gardens.
It was a gorgeous sunny day, and the temp reached 80 degrees.
We had a purpose -- checking out all the varieties of red buds at the Gardens.

Red Buds are smallish trees, that adapt to a wide range of conditions and amount of sunlight.
They survive storms, they survive bug invasions, they survive ice storms.
They might be gnarled and twisted, but they survive.

My husband and I both agree that they are our favorite spring tree.  But they do not have red buds -- who gave them such a misleading name?

They have some shade of purple buds -- or some are a pinkish or white variety.
The bud looks like a pea blossom and lasts 2-3 weeks.

The range of varieties made my mouth water.
And we enjoyed the fresh air, and the promise of spring.

….We weren't the only ones.
About half the county was there --
everyone studiously staying 6 foot or more apart.

  1. We have a purple blooming one that we rescued. It had been knocked down by our neighbors when they cleared a lane with their bulldozer.
